Biography

Born April 30, 1936, in Benton Harbor, Robert H. Murphy, called "Murf", earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees from Western Michigan University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. In 1962, he became a member of the Interlochen Arts Academy Charter Faculty and was Chair of the Keyboard Department for many years prior to his recent retirement. At Western Michigan University, Murf served as Director of Chapel Choir, Graduate Assistant and Instructor of Music. During his 39 years at Interlochen, he was Chair of the Building Committee for Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall, founder and organizer of ICA Chapel Organ Recital Series, and Chair of the Music Building Committee for ICA. For nearly four decades, he was music director and organist for Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. As an educator at Interlochen, Murf taught with great energy and effectiveness. Many of this students are in advanced studies at distinguished music schools. Others are serving as organists and music directors in churches throughout the country. In a "Special Tribute" from the State of Michigan, Governor Engler cited Murf for his "vision, commitment and ability to inspire others."
